The Michigan Wine Blog – Wineries and Vineyards of Michigan

Shady Lane Cellars

We are located on the Leelanau Peninsula of Michigan where the cool climate creates our deliciously vibrant wines. This unique climate allows our winemaker Adam Satchwell to honor nature’s ripe fruit qualities in every hand-crafted bottle of Shady Lane.

Our vision is to produce exemplary, classic cool-climate wines on the Leelanau Peninsula of Northern Michigan. Our focus is to craft wines that exhibit both elegance of structure and intensity of aroma and flavor. We are guided by the nature of our vineyards and the fruit they produce. We respect that every wine is a product of a thousand details, all of which need to be governed by the philosophy of reaching toward and developing an expression of place. We believe our vineyards and our team, all of which is our “terroir”, make Shady Lane Cellars that place to achieve this vision.

Our tasting room is a century old fieldstone chicken coop that we lovingly renovated and converted to our tasting room. It’s a memorable environment to enjoy our exceptional wines.

We invite you to visit us for the full Shady Lane experience. Until then, please enjoy our wines in your local restaurants and most importantly in the comfort of your home.

Shady Lane Cellars’ tasting room is located at 9580 Shady Lane, Suttons Bay, Michigan. To taste and purchase our wines, just take M-22 north from Traverse City 8 miles, then left on Shady Lane 1 mile.

Willow Vineyard

Willow Vineyards was established in 1992. It was and continues to be a work of passion and love, created and designed by John and Jo Crampton. Located on a beautiful, wind-swept hillside in Suttons Bay, the panoramic views of West Traverse Bay add to the majesty of the vineyard.

Our winemaker, Chris Guest has over 30 years of experience making wine in Michigan. Before coming north to Leelanau County he co-founded and was the creator of the award-winning wines of The Seven Lakes Vineyard. His interest in making great wines began at a time when you could count the number of Michigan wineries on your fingers and have three left to grip a stemmed glass. Since then his expertise has been sought by many Traverse area allowing him to broaden his influence on Michigan viniculture by working as a wine making consultant for the last two decades.

Chris’ approach of letting terroir and the vintage dictate the wine’s personality has kept the specter of boring sameness from creeping into the spectacular examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that Willow wines represent. His successes have earned him a cult following among his peer-group of winemakers who may quietly measure their achievements with these classic varieties against the Willow Vineyard standard.

When not keeping tabs on the progress of the current vintage, he desires not to be found, standing–flyrod in hand, a pack supplied with sandwiches and Willow Pinot Noir hung on a nearby bough–in one of the area’s great trout rivers.

Blustone Vineyards

Our Sylt Road vineyard is located on 40 acres of beautiful land in the middle of the Leelanau Peninsula in Northern Michigan. Planted in 2005, we have 10 acres of grapes with another 3 acres being prepped. Our Vineyard Manager takes great care to maximize our vine production while still using methods that are respectful to the environment.

The vineyard slopes across a broad hill that provides great sun angles while ensuring frost damage is minimized. It’s situated on good rocky soil on top of limestone that gives our grapes a unique minerality and is located at a elevation on the peninsula that gives us one of the longest growing seasons around.

Tasting Room

Blustone’s tasting room is located in the middle of the vineyard with panoramic views, floor to ceiling windows, and a modern, clean vibe that creates an experience of Leelanau that is unforgettable. A huge glass door will open up when its warmer outside and glasses of wine will be available to purchase and enjoy on the terrace. Feel free to stop on by – our tasting room staff would love to see you!

Left Foot Charley Winery and Tasting Room

Left Foot Charley was created in 2004. Winemaker Bryan Ulbrich was called to a favorite vineyard which had been recently sold to a new owner. It was sliding quickly into a state of disaster. The excessive growth, negligent canopy management and impending powdery mildew attack was too much to bear. With the somewhat bridled, yet honest support of his wife Jennifer, he cancelled their vacation to work in this vineyard and save the Riesling. In exchange he was able to harvest a small crop and create a single dry Riesling.

Through the process the Left Foot concept was formed. Throughout Northern Michigan there are numerous small vineyards owned and farmed by individuals who do not have wineries. The grapes were often sent to giant blends. Many of these viticulturists are excellent farmers and deserve to see their work turned into wine. Left Foot Charley has teamed up with Northern Michigan’s best 18 growers to produce wines that display the range of aroma and flavor found among the glacially tilled hills of our appellations. Lake effect, soil composition, vineyard aspect, and grower mentality shape these flavors individually. Each vineyard sell only to LFC and the commitments go beyond simple cash per ton arrangements. Through mutually established goals, their farms are defining terroir in our appellations. Our goal is to bring their work to the bottle.

The winery has since grown to around 6000 cases and is located in the former Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City, Michigan. The urban environment has served to bring the terroir to the people. LFC is a Michigan version of an Austrian Heuriger – a place where aromatic and flavorful wine is an everyday event. Locals and visitors alike have come to realize that the non-traditional setting pairs perfectly with the atypical fruit sourcing and old style winemaking that defines LFC. Left Foot has a committed a focus on white wine varietals, hard cider, and sparkling wine.

Tandem Ciders

Tandem CidersA unique stop on the Leelanau wine trail, Tandem Ciders specializes in artisanal hard ciders. In the major apple growing regions of Europe, a culture has developed around the enjoyment and deep appreciation of cider, of both the traditional production processes as well as the apples themselves. Cider plays an important role in these areas by helping create a healthy, relaxing lifestyle that revolves around a profound connection to the land and its offerings.

Tandem Ciders aims to establish a similar tradition in Leelanau County. We use Michigan apples in our ciders and work closely with neighboring growers that produce the fruit. We sell our product where the apples are grown, promoting the farmers and the valuable agricultural land of Leelanau County, as well as the cider itself. Our tasting room is a place that stresses the importance of the region, the significance of community, and a warm and comforting atmosphere that fosters communication and camaraderie. By demonstrating the tangible relationships between the land, apples, and the cider, Tandems Ciders encourages patrons to appreciate the essential connection between these entities.

Stop by and visit us! Head north on M-22 through Suttons Bay, and approximately 1.5 miles from the second blinking light, turn left on Setterbo Road. Wind up Setterbo for another mile and look for the white barn with a red tandem bicycle. Welcome to Tandem Ciders
